Building Community in an Era of Isolation
The revised edition of Community: The Structure of Belonging was born out of a recognition that isolation and divisive public discourse has expanded in the last decade. “We are more deeply isolated than we’ve ever been, even with all the tools of connection,” author Peter Block tells Restore Commons.
With a pruned narrative, the book is aimed at the heart of the breakdown of community and ways to stem the tide. The latter portion of the book provides questions and conversations that propel action.
The final examples highlight that authentic transformation occurs when there is a willingness to go slow and be low funded. This is how local invention and transformation occurs. While consumerism is about large scale, community and democracy are the opposite. For more on the revised edition, click here.
