In conjunction with the shifts within the core disciplines, and the narratives that spring from them, a shift is required in our thinking about how social fabric is woven and collective transformation occurs. Where the disciplines channel ways of thinking, collective transformation brings that thinking into action. We begin by valuing two words: “restoration” and “communal.” Transformation can most easily be conceived as a process of restoration. This simplifies the task. We do not have to invent what was never there. Transformation becomes a restorative process. Restorative justice. Restorative circles. Restoring our humanity. Remembering the parts set asunder. Transformation is shifting what we make visible, what we conserve or value. Transformation is the step of uncovering, restoring what is present; it is not amenable to being managed or produced.
