We add to restoration the word communal. We hold a long tradition of believing that transformation rests on the individual. The individual is at the center of our dominant narrative of transformation. Gandhi taught us to be the change we want to see in the world. We think change begins internally, with individual consciousness or mindfulness, and that action occurs from the inside out. If you want to change a culture, start with individual tools, training, and incentives. This individual focus has been a main assignment of modernism and its advocacy of individual rights and individual freedoms. This is why communal thinking and collective transformation are so sorely needed.
